Understanding FEGLI Coverage
Basic Insurance

Basic coverage is automatic for new federal employees unless you waive it. The amount equals your annual salary rounded up to the next $1,000, plus $2,000. You pay 2/3 of the premium; the government pays 1/3.

Extra Benefit: If you're under age 45, you receive additional coverage at no extra cost. This benefit gradually decreases from 2x your BIA (at age 35 and under) to 1x your BIA (at age 45+).

Option A - Standard

Provides an additional $10,000 of coverage. Premiums are based on your age and increase at 5-year intervals. Coverage reduces after age 65 unless you elect No Reduction.

Option B - Additional

Provides coverage in multiples (1-5x) of your annual salary. This is where costs can add up significantly, especially as you age. Many financial advisors suggest considering private term insurance as a more cost-effective alternative for higher coverage amounts.

Option C - Family

Provides coverage for your spouse ($5,000 per multiple) and eligible dependent children ($2,500 per multiple). You can elect 1-5 multiples. Eligible children must be unmarried and under age 22 (or any age if incapable of self-support due to a disability that began before age 22).

Coverage in Retirement

To keep FEGLI into retirement, you must be enrolled for the 5 years immediately before retirement (or your entire federal career if less than 5 years). After retirement:

  • 75% Reduction (Most Common): Coverage reduces 2% per month after age 65 until 25% of original coverage remains. Premiums stop at 65.
  • 50% Reduction: Coverage reduces 1% per month until 50% remains. You continue paying reduced premiums.
  • No Reduction: Full coverage continues, but premiums continue at age-based rates.
Key Considerations
  • Age-based pricing: FEGLI optional coverage becomes increasingly expensive as you age. Private term insurance may be more cost-effective.
  • No medical exam: FEGLI doesn't require a medical exam for new employees, making it valuable if you have health issues.
  • Open Season: FEGLI has a rare Open Season (happened in 2016 after 12 years). Outside Open Season, you can only increase coverage with a Qualifying Life Event (marriage, birth, etc.).
  • Living Benefits: If you're terminally ill (life expectancy of 9 months or less), you may receive a portion of your Basic coverage as a living benefit.
  • Assignment: You can assign your FEGLI to an irrevocable trust for estate planning purposes.
